Artist Information
Carroll Thayer Berry is one of the most important wood engravers from the United States. A native Mainer who created a body of work that is distinctively regional, Berry also worked in woodcut, linoleum block, oil paint and illustration. His work can be divided into 3 periods: Early linocuts and oils are experimental, reflecting the changing artistic trends of the new century. The Depression led to the creation of the more affordable medium of the woodblock, which developed into the realistic style of his wood engravings. In 1973, Berry returned to the precepts of Dynamic Symmetry, a theory of composition that involved the relationship of squares and rectangles within the composition.
