"Christ the Pantocrator" Russian Icon
Oil on wood panel, silver riza
9" x 7" x 3/4"
Silver stamp on back "Kokoshnik 84"
This icon portrays Christ in a popular depiction, as Christ the Pantocrator. This version of Christ in Christian iconography represents the "Almighty", and usually indicates Christ making a blessing gesture with one hand while holding scripture open in his other. Painted using oils on a wood panel, the piece is then covered with an intricately carved silver "riza", made to protect and to showcase the subject. There is a silver stamp on the reverse side stating "Kokoshnik 84", dating the piece.
